The first official programme allowing the public to propose local work for young offenders will be trialled in North West England and could be rolled out across the UK in 2010 if it proves successful. Under the "Making Good" scheme, communities affected by youth crime and anti-social behaviour will be able to suggest as punishment projects such as cleaning graffiti, repairing vandalised street furniture and charity work. The scheme will complement the Youth Rehabilitation Order which replaces existing community sentences in respect of children and young people from November 30, 2009.
