| Title |
Police accused of failing in duty to suspects |
| Details |
A survey undertaken by the National Audit Office (NAO) has revealed suspects are not receiving a fair trial due to police pressure preventing them from legal representation following arrest. Solicitors asked by the NAO stated they believed the reason half of all suspects do not avail themselves of free legal help was due to police pressure or inaction. The belief is supported by additional research by the NAO showing solicitors can have problems accessing their clients at police stations. During the period April to October 2008, 29 per cent of calls made to police stations by advisers of the Legal Services Commission were unanswered. The Law Society has labelled the survey results "disturbing". |
